How Does Climate Change Affect Herbs? Seminar at Santhigiri Siddha Medical College Imparts New Experience

Pothencode: Santihgiri 20th batch students come closer to nature in their studies. The class held yesterday (04.04.2024, Thursday) on the ‘Identification of Medicinal Plants to Study their Phenological Characters’ was a unique experience. The seminar conducted by Jawaharlal Nehru National Botanical Garden Technical Officer and Systematic Botanist Dr. E. S. Santosh Kumar for the 20th batch students of Santhigiri Siddha Medical College in the audio-visual room became a new experience. The seminar was conducted in a suitable way for the curriculum of the second-year students such as identifying the medicinal plants by the changes that occur in the medicinal plants due to climatic differences, the properties of the medicinal plants, their characteristics, which plant family they belong to, the special elements in the plant families that lead to a closer look and identification, the characteristics of the scientific names of the plants, classification, etc. A field trip to Santhigiri Siddha Medical College Medicinal Botanical Garden was also organized as an extension of the seminar. Dr. E. S. Santosh Kumar taught the students and teachers about ten plants identified and named. His lively explanations of the more than 400 herbs in the garden, which were not yet recognized in the botanical garden, made everyone happy and more knowledgeable. Everyone was surprised by the friendly relationship of the doctor with the students. As a part of the seminar and field trip, 20th batch students J.S.Akhila, R.S.Geetu, and S.Nandana Krishna sang a self-composed song representing plant leaves. S. Nandana Krishna, B. P. Sindhu, and V. Ranjitha participated in the discussion and question and answer session. Medicinal Botany Subject Assistant Professor B.P. Sindhu of Santhigiri Siddha Medical College Gunapatham Department delivered the welcome message and V. Ranjitha, Associate Professor, Medicinal Botany, Department of Medicine, Santhigiri Siddha Medical College, Gunapatham Department expressed the vote of thanks.

Santhigiri Siddha Medical College Gunapatham Assistant Professor Dr. SS Rajveshwari, Associate Professor, Department of Pharmacology, Dr. S. Shobhanavalli, 20th batch students, Angelina Sebastian, Botany workers R. Divakaran, K. Pushkaran, T. Vijayan, M. R. Manjula, and B. Omana. attended. The seminar started at 10:00 am and the field trip that followed ended at 03:45 pm.
